In the USA, online gambling is legal in some forms while others are still restricted. The Unlawful Internet Gambling Enforcement Act of 2006 and the Federal Wire Act regulate online gambling and betting in the United States.

States’ laws work in accordance with these. Hence, some states in the USA restrict some forms of online gambling on a local level, while others prohibit them all. Here is a list for you to check whether your state allows online gambling and in what form.

Currently, these states offer online casino services:

  • New Jersey – legalized online casino gambling in 2013
  • Michigan – a new member (2021)
  • Pennsylvania – legalized online casino gambling in 2019
  • West Virginia – legalized since 2019
  • Delaware – opened its doors to the online gambling community, including online casinos in 2012
  • Connecticut – legalized online gambling activities in late 2021

Below are the states where online sports betting is allowed. Please note that every state has its own regulations when it comes to the number and quantity of wagers. Here is the list:

  • New Jersey
  • Arizona
  • Nevada
  • Virginia
  • West Virginia
  • Colorado
  • Pennsylvania
  • New Hampshire
  • Tennessee
  • Connecticut
  • Wyoming
  • Illinois
  • Michigan
  • Iowa
  • Indiana
  • Montana
  • Oregon
  • Rhode Island
  • Washington
  • Louisiana

Numerous online gambling sites feature different kinds and variations of poker games, including Video Poker and Live Dealer poker. However, not every state has this form of online gambling legalized. Here is a list of all the states that have available online poker at the moment:

  • New Jersey
  • Michigan
  • Nevada
  • Delaware
  • Pennsylvania

States That Plan On Legalising Online Gambling

Many states in the USA have yet to legalize online gambling in any form. On the other hand, some have legalized one or two kinds, but have not reached the point of legalizing others.

Currently, it is expected for California to regulate online poker and online sports betting. There is not much optimism about expanding in the gambling area for this state, but lawmakers are slowly paving the way.

Massachusetts’ Gambling Commission is pushing to regulate the question surrounding online gambling in this state. Land-based gambling is legal and regulated, now there is only work towards regulating the online activities in this area.

It is expected for New York to gain its first legal online sports betting in late 2021 or 2022. This state has on-the-spot sports betting and is waiting for lawmakers to finally round up the online section as well.

Maryland is also working on regulating online sports betting. It was voted on a referendum that online sports betting should be regulated, but this betting hasn’t kick-started yet. It is expected that this process will start in early 2022.
Ohio has already introduced a bill that regulates sports betting. However, sports betting still isn’t legal in this state, but this is expected to change in the near future, hopefully at the beginning of 2022. The current bill includes mobile licenses and retail sports betting licenses.
