Bovada Faces Prohibition in Washington D.C. and Connecticut

Unfortunately for Bovada fans and lovers, the number of regions from which the offshore gaming operator Bovada is pulling out keeps increasing. Connecticut and Washington, D.C. were recently added to the roster of restricted states, as noted by Bovada itself.

Effective July 29, this restriction is part of a broader initiative to curb unlicensed gambling websites in the United States, although the trigger for this decision was the violation of law by Harp Media B.V., the owner of Bovada.

Connecticut’s Department of Consumer Protection (DCP) instructed Harp Media B.V to cease operations within the state. The DCP asserted that Bovada violated Connecticut laws and the Connecticut Unfair Trade Practices Act (CUTPA).

Harp Media B.V., headquartered in Curaçao, is also facing restrictions in Washington, D.C. Although D.C. has not issued a similar directive, it has nonetheless blocked Bovada. This aligns with D.C.’s recent move to broaden its online sports betting market, which now includes operators like BetMGM, Caesars, and DraftKings.

What’s next for Bovada?

The number of states prohibiting Bovada is rapidly increasing, with the possibility of additional restrictions on the horizon. West Virginia has also recently taken a decisive stance against Bovada’s operations, following the issuance of a cease-and-desist order in June and the establishment of a compliance deadline.

In June, it was revealed that the Massachusetts Gaming Commission was considering issuing a cease-and-desist order to the site. However, a decision will be reached after a forthcoming formal evaluation.

While on the other hand, discussions are underway about tackling illegal sports betting in Louisiana, as state officials voice worries about the absence of consumer protections in unlicensed gambling operations. The Louisiana Gaming Control Board is preparing to implement regulatory actions to protect its citizens, meaning Bovada may be their first name on their list.

Conclusion and why you should avoid illegal online casino sites

Despite being illegal, offshore gambling sites continue to advertise and make themselves known to you. Just search for online casinos on Google, and you’ll probably see several casinos in the results that, despite being recommended by Google itself (through paid advertisement), are illegal to use.

Their marketing often appears legitimate, which can mislead new bettors who might not distinguish between licensed and unlicensed online casinos, putting them at risk.

These unregulated platforms often lack essential consumer protections, leaving players vulnerable to unfair practices and potential fraud. Without oversight from gaming authorities, there is no guarantee that these sites will handle your personal and financial information securely, and there is little recourse if you encounter issues such as rigged games or delayed payouts.

Furthermore, participating in illegal online gambling can have legal consequences, as many jurisdictions have strict laws against unlicensed gambling activities, potentially resulting in fines or other legal troubles.

Unlike regulated casinos, which undergo regular audits and adhere to strict gaming fairness guidelines, illegal sites operate without such scrutiny, increasing the likelihood of unethical practices. By opting for licensed and regulated online casinos, you ensure a safer, more reliable gambling experience with proper consumer protections and fair play assurances.

So yes, you may still access Bovada from D.C. and CT following this restriction, but we highly recommend against it due to the aforementioned reasos.
